Evaluation - Q3
What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
When in the research area of our coursework, I constructed a target audience questionnaire (seen on post titled "Target audience") to find out what appealed to others and what people within our target audience expected in a music video. I handed out questionnaires to 17 people all together, 8 being male and 7 being female. 15 of these were in the age range of 16-25 which is what our target audience age range is, so it was important for me to read exactly what the individuals want as the majority of them are who we are appealing to.
We asked a question on what content should be in the music video from the selection of:
- Varied Shots
- Animated sequences
- Exotic locations
- Nudity
- Narrative
- Choreography
- CGI
- Violence
This, for me was the most important question of them all having understood that most of them are within our target audience. I wrote that they could circle as many as they liked and the outcome revealed that 11 people thought varied shots should be included, 9 people said narrative and 8 people wrote choreography. From this information, it was a core structure of ensuring that I produce these media elements into my music video as I then knew that it was something that appealed to that age range. However, when planning futher into the coursework, it was evident that choreography wouldn't be appropiate for this Genre - Indie (which 6 people liked the most from the questionnaire) and wouldn't fit into the narrative.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
I constructed a 'Music Video Questionnaire Evaluation' which asks 13 questions which provide an understanding to me whether I have achieved what I wanted; the video appealing to my target audience, and so therefore, ultimately it has also achieved what they wanted (varied shots and narrative). I handed the questionnaire out to 10 people, 5 being male and the other 5 female, all within the target audience.
1. How much did you enjoy the music video?
2. Did it grasp and hold your attention?
3. How do you rate the camera work and editing?
I think to me, this is an important question to get feedback from as this is where the audience can pick up on any of the conventions specifically used, and whether they relate to the music genre. From doing our final questionnaire (which I shall show later on) the majority of the feedback resulted in other media students saying that they could establish the conventions within the video. For example, there being more performance shots with George rather than narrative as this is highly likely in indie music videos. Despite their being challenging conventions-like having a non-linear narrative as flashbacks are used, there are enough used conventions which are needed. 'Rolan Barthes' theory 'five narrative codes', one including 'referential' is included, so people can understand the piece clearer, for example, the white fades enable the audience to know there are flashbacks.
4. How do you rate the standard of mise-en-scene?
The purpose of this question is to know whether the audience have understood the generic structure of the genre and the mise-en-scene that reflected this. It is really important as it encourages and allows the audience to identify what the style and genre the music video is through mise-en-scene.
5. Was the music video: too short, correct length, too long, I don't know?
This just required the audience to simply write what they thought with no explanation. However, it was important to see whether anyone wrote 'too long' as this would often refer to them becoming bored. This can often be because the cuts are spread out for too long or they are constantly at the same pace, showing no reflection about the narration or tempo of the music that the audience sub-consciously understand.
6. Would you watch the music video again?
Once again, this comes down to the individual finding it boring or not. From the question, it allows me to know whether the conventions, different generic rules, camera shots etc, have all been deemed a success.
7. Can you suggest anything that could improve the appeal?
This is the first question where it is a more personal, opinion style question, which therefore draws in the audience theory. We wanted the music video to have an active audience and so the responses we got, shows this is what the audience were and so they fit with the more 'reception' theory. It also shows that they are within our demographic audience.
Digipak Questionnaire Evaluation
1. Does the digipak successfully reflect the genre of music?
2. Does the magazine advert successfully reflect the genre of music?
Again, once the audience has fully understood the generic conventions (which would hopefully be easy for them to establish, through an active target audience I was particularly aiming at) it can be answered more effectively. However, seeing the difference in the response of this question and the first one will highlight which ancillary task my target audience gave more positive feedback from which enables me to review them both knowing what the audience felt reflected more strongly with the indie genre.
3. How do you rate the standard of graphics in the package?
This question enabled me to understand whether the audience are passive or have a certain understanding about the different technology and conventions that have been used to create the ancillary tasks. The question allows a range of different audiences to give an opinion on how effective the package is in terms of it looking at a professional standard.
4. Can you suggest anything ?
I wanted to asked these questions to a member of my target audience as I felt it was important for me to know what someone specifically thought that was in my target audience.
